What every items are much more expensive in France than the USA? |
going to study abroad in (La Rochelle) France for a half year. Just wondering what items would be better to stock up on before going. For example I hear batteries used to be comparitively expensive from my friend, though she went several years ago. toiletries? accesories? any recommendations? |

Different things are more expensive but you would not take food for 6 months for exemple, right ?
One thing that you can bring, and which is for sure cheaper in USA, is quality jeans (such as Levi's..). BTW: if you can bring one for me I am 34/36 ;-).
About money: don't BRING money for 6 months, take a VISA card. You will find ATM everywhere and you can pay most things with card in all shops (excepted cheapest stuff). Or, consider opening a bank account here IF you intend to earn some money (such as during a work experience).
Have a nice trip. Never been in La Rochelle but it is a very beautiful city.
Edit: If you want to see some supermarket prices for everyday's products - beauty, etc. -, have a look here (in french) : http://www.ooshop.fr/. It's an online supermarket, maybe prices are slightly higher than in the real shop but it should give you an idea.
Edit2: BTW, if you will use a CD or DVD writer (e.g handycam, or laptop computer), and will need blank disks, bring a spindle of them. There is a stupid tax here, for *each* 4.7 blank DVD you pay a tax 1.20 euro to the artists's society :-(... |

Before you stock up, log on to french customs....they have limits on how much of anything you can bring into the country without paying expensive import duties. But as stated earlier...take lots of money cause every dang thing is more expensive....(especially food) |

Paris is the third most expensive city in the world (behind Tokyo and Osaka and just ahead of London) so the cost of living in France is expensive. I would find a website of a French supemarket and compare prices. Although things might be more expensive, is it really worth carrying it all that way? |

Life in Paris is expensive, but "la rochelle" product not cost so much. if you go to supermarket, you will find small price product.
what is more expensive here ?
oil, car and house and it's enough. food could be more expensive due to the quality. here we eat more vegetables and it cost more than fast food.
buy fragance to the airport or in the plane (cheapest) and alcool. you win the tax. |

Don't worry, La Rochelle is a nice town, not very expensive in the winter, more in the summer when tourists come.
Don't forget an adaptor for all you electrical stuff, and if you're addict to some american food (peanuts butter...), you won't find any in France!
you will have great time in such a nice city, emjoy. |

Personally, here is my little list:
-any lotion and/or body product that you are attached to... you will probably have a time finding the same here
-tea tree oil
-hair grips
-film (if you still use a film camera)
-books (hard to find English books at a decent price)
-wait to develop film if possible until your return to the States
-As for batteries, 4 'AA' Duracell batteries cost approx. 2.45€ or 3.11 $.
-socks & hosiery
Other stuff I would bring:
-neosporin creme
-Advil
You can contact me if you need any other advice... HAVE FUN |

I have no specific recommendations; transportation expenses would wipe out savings from buying stuff elsewhere and hauling it to France. But my impression (formed entirely by a stroll around CDG) is that you had best bring lots of money. |

I found that items such as curling irons and hair driers are more expensive there, so my roommate and I split those items. She bought the drier, and I bought the curling iron. Those are the only things I found to be more expensive. Things that are less expensive: wine, cheese, bread, basically any quality food. So if you are a food person, enjoy, because it is fantastic! Have fun in La Rochelle, and if you get a chance, take a weekend trip to Tours, which is my favorite city in the world! |
