There's plenty of worthwhile specialties....
If you're into rather meaty food, the Cassoulet from the southwest and the choucroute from the northeast are fairly uncommon. a boeuf bourgingon is also outside of the average.
A rather unknown dish that you can still find in some bistrots is the 'Hachis Parmentier', a mashed potato lasagna-like dish (definetly one of my faves).
And well there's the gallette sarrasin (the true crepe)...a complete is always nice. |

I would have to say the rotten cheeses they eat, also Italy has a huge assortment of those rotten cheeses but in Italy it's illegal to make the cheese, the cheese has to form naturally. I don't recall the name of the cheese but I know it contains maggots and is considered a delicacy. You can find frog legs and snails anywhere these days especially in many main stream asian restaurants. |

Crepes - thin waffles with nutella spread over it and rolled over. Its also there in Belgium but...
Try the "Parisian" version of Hotdog. Even the bread they use is gourmet baguette and Dijon mustard is heavenly. This is street food that I mean - not in fancy restaurants.
Buy some squeezy tubes of Amora mustard as souvenirs. |
