What is a good city in France to visit that is not named Paris?

I'm from the United States and I've been to Paris once, so I at least understand the vibe there if not much else. I loved it, but I'm wondering about some of the other cities in France that might be interesting areas for a tourist to visit.

I'll learn enough French by the time I travel to have elementary abilities speaking wise.

Thanks

You should go to Bordeaux, this is a beautiful city in the south west of France, which in some ways doesn't feel like one, it is quite relaxing and there is a good vibe about this place .

You will love the architecture of the place, its old narrow streets, its opera house, beautiful churches and big avenues, its gorgeous park ("le jardin public") its night life with many bars, cafés and restaurants (especially in the Saint Pierre quarter), the river quayside which has been newly been refurbished.

Bordeaux has also got the longest pedestrian street in Europe ! This is "la rue sainte Catherine" and is great for shopping !
To move around in the city center it is best to walk or use the trams as parking places and traffic can make you waste precious time !

You can also rent a car to see the surroundings : the beautiful beaches on the west coast in less than an hour (Cap ferret, Arcachon, Biscarosse, Biarritz), or visit the vineyards and taste some of the best wine ever (St Emilion, Medoc, Sauternes...)

The Dordogne is not far either and is an area famous for its "terroir" food (foie gras, truffes ...) and its gorgeous landscapes.

If you are like to move around you can also go to the Pyrennées mountains in less than 4 hour which is great if you go there in the winter season and like skiing.
From Paris you can get there by plane, or by train on the TGV.

I use to live there and it is truly a great place.

To see more of it here is a good website I just found

Wherever you go , have a nice time !

You should try Saint-Malo (Brittany). I've spent my holidays there since I am 7 and I love it so much !!! this is a wonderful city ( not only for me, I hope). We I'm here I really feel as if I were still at the corsairs' time.

I also advice you Toulouse , Rocamadour (Midi-Pyrénées) and Besançon and its region (Franche-Comté-go there in autumn, because the tree's colors are so beautiful... )

And of course the Riviera (Antibes or Nice for example).

Nice, Cannes, Marseilles, I have always wanted to go to Provence and see all of the different regions. Or you could go to Monaco, it is basically France.
Here is a link, click on Europe, and it will take you to a guide for France.

Bordeaux is the most wonderful city I have ever been to!

The centre is amazing with great shops, the quayside has amazing bars and clubs, the people are all so friendly, there are great museums and the football team rule!!

Plus the wine is pretty good too!

For something very different, I would visit Montpellier in Languedoc (which is the California of France).

You can take other people's advice on cities in france to visit, but I suggest one of these days, take a trip to Québec. It's much like France... The Québecois have done a wonderful job at maintaining their french heritage.

Just don't go to Montreal, because it's full of assholes, but then again, that can be said about any large city.
