What is best place to exchange dollars for french francs?

going to paris for Valentines Day and asking girlfriend to marry me on the Eiffel Tower. Or do we need Euros? If so same question
Additional Details
We were in Rome in June and were able to exchange dollars for Euro's at small street money exchange shops. THis was a better rate than the airport or banks. I was really wondering if that was the case in Paris?

you will need euros, they changed from francs YEARS ago! The exchange rate is generally MUCH better at an ATM. You can use most any debit card from the US in ATM machines in Europe as long as they are connected to one of the major labels such as Visa, Star, etc. Remeber if you use a credit card it's a cash advance and you will pay accordingly.
You can also exchange some in the airports (either in US or France) but this is generally much more expensive/less advantageous. I would avoid Traveler's checks as they can be hard to exchange/expensive to use.

PS good luck with your girlfriend!

Ok if you try to change Dollars into Francs good luck with that, cause the currency no longer exist and since 31/12/2001 and was replace with Euros since 01/01/2002.

You need euros. The airport is usually the best place to get your initial amount (say 500 euros or so) and than use your debit card to get new euros from cash machines as you go along.

As long as you give yoru home bank enough notice (about a month) they should be able to get you some Euros before you leave the country. Then use your debit card.

With debit cards you can find an ATM (easy to find) and get money out there. Make sure you alert your debit card bank before you go that you'll be using it in Paris, otherwise they might put a stop on your account thinking it could be fraud. The bank will do the money conversion from Euro to your bank's currency. You will most likely encounter a small fee when getting money out with your debit card (not any different from exchanging money), so you'll want to take out a little extra each time. Depending on the length of your stay, take out enough for a week or two. And then make new transactions when you run out.

My bank can get euros for me within a few days to a week. However, they don't offer the best exchange rate, and by the time they add on their fees, it's cheaper for me to simply get some money out of ATMs as I need it. I don't like to carry around a large amount of cash, so I get enough for a few days at a time. I also don't spend that much money (not a shopper, not an extravagant restaurant-goer), so a couple hundred euros usually lasts me for about 4 or 5 days depending on how many museums I go to.

I'm going to France in March and I was wondering the exact thing. Except there are no more Francs, just Euros.

I contacted a local travel agency and asked them about exchanging some USD for Euros, and they'll do it. I'd rather do it there than at the airport (the airports RIP people off). Then, I'm just going to be using my Debit Card, because it's easier and I get a better exchange rate. Just remember that you should get enough out for a few days, etc. because my bank, here in the us, charges a fee for foreign ATM and the ATMS charge a fee.

Good Luck and I hope she says, YES!
