The culture, the historic buildings, the art, paintings, sculpture, monuments, galleries and museums, the food and wines, the quality and variety of produce, the gorgeous landscapes, the splendid motorway network, the clean comfortable high speed rail network, the love of beauty, the flair that exists in many spheres from clothing and fashion to every day objects, the literature, the opera, ballet and the concerts, the dashing shows, the stunning films made over the years, automobile and aerospace design, forward looking architecture, great perfumes and beauty products, good and effective medical system, family orientated civilised traditions, and last but not least a beautiful language.
The quality of life is exceptional, and this explains why so many people are so keen to move there. You now find English speaking people settled everywhere including the most remote spots in the countryside. |

It's where Modernism started. It's also a great country for food and wine, clothes and design.
It's well worth visiting, but they do appreciate it if you at least attempt to speak some French. |

It is not any one particular thing or even any list of things but the balance and harmony of all the various aspects of life.
There are many countries that have produced great art in the same quantity and quality, many places with equally historic buildings. French cuisine is excellent but so is Italian ((and it was the Italians who taught the French how to cook), Chinese, Indian and a host of others. France produces great wines (and a lot of not so great wine) but the French send students of U. Cal. Davis to study wine making and both the Americans and Italians, among others, produce equally great wines. The rail system is very good but then so is that in Japan. The countryside is beautiful but that's true of a lot of places, including the United States (I think the Hudson river Valley is the most beautiful place on Earth). The French health care system is rated #1 but that is to a large measure because there is universal health insurance coverage (America has, arguably the technologically best). But you get the idea.
Its the combination of all those superlatives coupled with a positive attitude about enjoying life and having the wherewithal to support that attitude that makes for a very pleasant life for the average French resident.
NB:I agree with Wise Owl that there are a lot of English people living in France but the principle reason many are doing so is because property is cheaper in France than in the UK. |

I liked it when I visited this summer. I was only their for 3 nights but it was interesting to find an Italian restaurant on every block. The touristy sights are pretty nice. They were setting up for the finale of the Tour de France, it would have been nice if i could have stayed to see it. |
