Agreed! I loved living in the south of France. I lived in Pertuis, by Aix-en-Provence and then in Cassis, which is right on the Mediterranean, for a a bit. The people are lovely, the fields are covered in lavender, and there's an abundance of fresh foods and fish. It's easy to live there and find yourself staying there. There's lots of history surrounding you and great culture everywhere. Aix-en-Provence and Marseille are the largest cities in the south of France and have tons of shopping and everything a large metropolis could provide. |

ok, I'll be the party pooper! I do not disagree with previous answers... but it's not all rosy!
Spending time in south of france can be and will probably be great. but there is a reality check.
If you do not speak the language, you will miss out. and you will be had! you will remain the foreigner. you will have to actively involve yourself into the community because they may not think of you as one of them.
when it comes to the "Administration", you will learn to curse in a colourful manner very quickly! there will be road blocks.
so please make sure you are prepared for ...challenges and disapointment. but you will still have a good time.
one good book / series: "a year in provence" - funny to read, it's obvious the author loves it down there, and it's still realistic.

I had a really great experience living in Aix-en-Provence. Beautiful sights and sunny! There was a lot of wind however. The food in the south is Mediterranean style, so in my opinion, very good! I speak French fluently, but found it difficult to make French friends (compared to Alsace where I live now with many French friends). Also, compared to Alsace, the south is much more fashion conscious. |

Brilliant! Live about 60kms from med, food great, wine great, scenery great, in fact everything is just great! Would never go back to UK! |
