Camper shoes is the best way to travel around Paris. They're comfortable, last long walks and are stylish even for European standards.
If you're playing tourist, most of the major attractions (Eiffel, Notre Dame, Musee D'orsay, Louvre, Centre Pompidou, the gardens, Champs Elysees, etc, etc) are all within walking distance of each other. With a tiny bit of planning, you can plan a route that requires no more than 15mins between locations.
Some locations are more out of the way, such as the Sacre Coeur / Mont Martre, are easily accessible by a combinatin of walking and Metro.
The Metro is reasonably easy to navigate in terms of finding what line to take and what stop to get off on. The lines are identified numerically and the direction defined by the end stops rather than the direction (although I think a couple have since extended so the "end stop" is a bit different). The hard part is navigating the stations themselves as sometimes, the arrows are not th most informative. |

The best way by far is the Metro. There are stations everywhere, and it's quick and cheap. Walking is good too, and is a better way to take everything in. If you plan to go out after the Metros stop running, I suggest Taxis. I went out for a late snack once at 4 in the morning (while all the locals were coming out of bars), and the restaurant called a cab for me. |

Use both metro and buses.
Metro can be faster, but it's also crowded.
The bus allow you to see the monuments.
In Paris, if you cannot go directly from one place to another by metro there is probably a bus for you. |

Metro and walking. It's a very "walkable" city but the Metro is fantastic. It's easy to use, runs frequently and seemed very safe to me. |

Walking in comfortable yet stylish shoes. (Don't want to look like an ugly American.) It's awesome to randomly discover cool neighborhoods, shops, good-looking streets with good looking people. I could never find a cab at night. |

Go down to the metro and get your photo taken in a booth. Take the photo to the cashier and get a carte orange. This is a weekly/monthly unlimited ticket that costs less than the tourist passes. Then, use the bus as much as possible to see new parts of the city. When you need to get from a to b, use the metro. |

If you want a map of Paris Metro you could try the Parisian metro website at http://www.ratp.com where you could plan your trip from famous monument to your hotel and it will show you the fastest, the more convenient trip or you could also have a timetable for the bus.
So on the RATP website you should also find tickets rates but the more easily and less expensive is the Carte Orange for unlimited travels weekly or monthly.
Paris Visite is a pass to discover Paris and its region.
The user's name must be written on the pass (no photo necessary). Each coupon is valid for either a 1, 2, 3 or 5 day period (calendar days and not a 24 hour period) of your choice: 1-3, 1-5, 1-8 zones.
The whole journey is regardless of the first utilisation of the pass.
With the Paris Visite pass travel freely within the zone area of your choice.
This pass offers a reduced rate for children between 4 and 11 years of age.
This pass is on sale in all metro, RER and SNCF stations, the Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports and in certain Parisian hotels and many tour operators abroad.
Before utilisation, write your name on the card and copy the coupon number on the card, also the pass expiration date.
One thing to know it that there is a zone rates system: for example when you are in Paris the zone is 1, if you want to go to Eurodisney which is approximatively 50km from Paris you need a zone 5 ticket. |
