I am a student with a group of friends and no car and I do not have a lot of money to spend on transport.

Walk, swim and walk.

In France there's no real "intercity" bus service so, really your only option is with the train (there are also low cost airlines),

You can see schedules from Paris to Annecy here :
http://bonjourlafrance.net/france-trains/tgv-french-alps/schedules/paris-chambery-annecy.htm
and use the links to find any other itineraries you might want to Annecy.

If and when you buy tickets, you can get reduced rates as a youth (under 25) and also if you reserve well ahead of time. (Tickets are available for purchase 60-90 days before departure). Special rate tickets do have conditions... including not being reimbursed if not used... so, be careful.

Bon voyage.

taxed till i die,
Which start point?

Hazel
If it is from Paris, I would say the Train.
You can get more information on to the SNCF web site.

Good luck.

Try flying with Ryan air to Chambery or Grenoble and then pick up local transport to Annecy. Stay at the Formule1 motel or Etap motel for the cheapest accommodation.
