It was a palace that has been added on to many times by kings wanting to leave their mark. Eventually the palace was moved to Versailles and it was made a museum.
Now it is one of the most famous art museums in the world, housing many famous pieces like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo (just to name a few).
It's absolutely awesome (but fulllllll of tourists), and so massive that it would take weeks? (I believe) to see everything in it.

It's regarded as one of the world's great art museums, despite that ridiculous pyramid in front of the place. If you have the opportunity, go there.

The Louvre was originally a fortress that became a royal palace and has been converted to use as a Museum. For many years it housed not only an art Museum but a variety of French government offices.

The original fortress was built by King Philip Auguste in the 12th century. The royal treasury was housed there beginning in the mid 13th century, at which time it also became one of the residences of the King.

In the following centuries various kings enlarged and altered the building and it did not reach its present form (ignoring the modern glass pyramid) until the 19th century when Napoleon III made the final additions.
