What is the meaning of the roadside signs showing sillouette of men with brain or heart attack, in France?

When in the Auvergne Rhone-Alpes region of France recently I noticed a lot of roadside signs depicting a black sillouette of a man with a red part indicating a broken heart or a brain injury ("attack"?). Sometimes these were in groups of 2 or 3. What do these mean? I thought perhaps to indicate where there had been previous road accidents, as a deterant, but there appeared to be a lot of them. Also, why sometimes a brain attack symbol, and othertimes a heart attack symbol? They mostly seemed to appear on the outskirts of small towns.

As said above, they represent people killed in car crashes, at the location of the crash. Yes, there are a lot of them. As I understand it, they are temporary items.

Yes, this roadside signs indicate the number of people who have been killed in road accidents in this area in the past 5 years.

A sign at the entrance of the road advises you , for exemple: Be careful 32 persons have been killed and 80 wounded in this road.

It indicates the places where people were killed in car accidents in the last years.

There have always been many killed in car accidents in France (Many cars and trucks come thought France to go to Spain, Italy...). Recent security promotions have managed to decrease this number from 8000 / year in 2001 to 5300 / year in 2005.

i think that they indicate the number of people who have been killed in road accidents.

there may, as you say, be a number of them, but i am not sure for how many years the records go back.

other communities may display accident statistics on a roadside board

even when there are no silhouette thingies or numbers, there are flowers left by the roadside or on fenceposts at the sites of previous fatal crashes.

wow - gosh never heard of that! Do you think it means the villagers don't appreciate villagers and will attack any tourists to the village. Let me know if you find the answer that's interesting!
