Versailles Palace

The ChÃ¢teau de Versailles â€”or simply Versaillesâ€” is a royal chÃ¢teau, outside the gates of which the village of Versailles, France, has grown to become a full-fledged city. From 1682, when King Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in 1789, the court of Versailles was the centre of power under the Ancien RÃ©gime. In 1660, Louis XIV, who was approaching majority and the assumption of full royal powers from the advisors who had governed France during his minority, was casting about for a site near Paris but away from the tumults and diseases of the crowded city. He had grown up in the disorders of the civil war between rival factions of aristocrats called the Frondes and wanted a site where he could organize and completely control a government of France by absolute personal rule. He settled on the royal hunting lodge at Versailles and decided to convert it into a palace. In 1661 Louis Le Vau made some additions which he developed further in 1668. In 1678 Mansart took over the work, the Galerie des Glaces, the chapel and the two wings being due to him. On May 6, 1682 Louis XIV took up residence in the chÃ¢teau. Furnishings had been plundered from Louis' disgraced finance minister's Nicolas Fouquet splendid house at Vaux-le-Vicomte, whose grand success there was his undoing.

Obviously Versailles is not strictly in Paris, but Smiddy assumes you are travelling to gay Paris and putting together an itinerary. You shouldn't miss Versailles. Eiffel Tower: obviously. Arc de Triomphe: of course. A coffee on the Champs Ã‰lysÃ©es: must do. Trip to the Louvre: naturally. But do get out to see the Palace Versailles - you won't regret! Have fun!!

For me, it was seeing the vast collection of art at the Louvre. I loved the architecture itself of the Louvre.

A few others: the Eiffel Tower for the first time. I had dreamed of seeing the Eiffel Tower since I was a little girl. The first time I laid eyes on it, I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

After climbing the plethora of stairs in Montmartre to the Sacre-Coeur Basilica, the view from the steps of Sacre-Couer...the city of Paris is spread out in front of you. The best panoramic view in the city.

The Notre Dame Cathedral is beautiful...inside and out. It is a massive cathedral, but the inside is breathtaking. Attending mass there for the first time (Gregorian chant...beautiful) was wonderful, and I'm not Catholic.

There are so many amazing sites in Paris...it's hard to choose just one. But once you travel there and are able to experience these sites for yourself, you'll be able to attach your own memories to the sites, making them all the more special to you.

Paris is choc full of amazing things to see:

* Eiffel Tower (take the lift to the top at sunset or later on)
* Montmartre and Sacre Coeur (esp on a sunshiny Sunday morning)

* Pigalle red light district by night
* Notre Dame cathedral
* St Ouen flea market
* Parc Andre Citroen (bizarre urban park)
* Walk 'la Voie Triomphale' going from the Louvre right through to la Defense (great for concept photography)

* Louvre Pyramid (described as 'spiritual glasswork')
* 'Bouquinistes' (book sellers) along the Left Bank
* Allee des Cygnes (strange island in the Seine with statue of liberty at the end)

* Centre Pompidou (thought-provoking modern art)
* Ride the metro line 2 (sky blue colour) from Republique to Rome stations, and tour the 'arab quarters' from a safe distance

* rue Mouffetarde (villagey market and characterful centre of nightlife)
* Quartier Latin (typically Parisian cafes)
* Ride around on the metro for a while and observe Paris' ethnic mix and listen to some of the best busking (yellow coloured line 1 is probably the best as it makes a strange whistling noise when it moves away)

* Bastille (funky bars, funky shops, bohemian neighbourhood)
* la Defense (a glimpse into the 21st century by architecture)
* Walk from Parc Buttes Chaumont, through Belleville to Menilmontant and Saint Germain de Charonne (explore the 'bygone eastern villages')

* Saint Germain des Pres (lovely boutiques and restaurants)
* Arts et Metiers metro station (designed like inside of a submarine)

* Tuilleries (pleasant gardens to stroll around in)
* Champs Elysees (most famous street in city, justifiably so)

Don't try to take it all in, you can't. Just find a few places you want to go and enjoy.
It is and remains, one of the most beautiful and exceptionally cosmopolitan cities in the world.
