A good pair of walking shoes... Also- if you are going in the summer and it is hot- make sure you bring a cardigen sweater or somthing light. Some of the nicer churches and cathedrals that you may want to visit will NOT let you in with out covering your arms.

In Paris, you'll probably want to have an umbrella. And unless you go between July 1 and August 20, you'll probably want something to keep you warm (at least a sweater in June and September, perhaps a light coat as well).

-A digital camera with extra batteries and memory.
-A lot of money.

I have been to both countrys.. things that I found helpful.
make sure that if you carry a wallet to carry it in your front pocket...lot of pick pockets in france and italy... dont carry a fanny pack in naples italy I have seen people on mopeds snatch them off people....
make sure that you have a credit card ....I have found visa to be accepted in almost every country that I have traveled to... also most Americian atm cards work pretty good and you get a pretty good exchange rate that way... if you use blow dryers ect You will need an adapter....
cell Phones? If you use cingular or t-mobile you can get the international plan added to your phone for you trip...
I could go on and on but not sure what you need to know .
both countrys are great ...people are great and there is alot to see , just remember ...to keep your eyes open...be safe and enjoy your trip

Walking shows are really important if you're going to Rome; they basically don't have a subway. Bring your passport with you at all times, but especially on trains. Some EU countries don't check, but I was stopped at the Italian border once.
