Jeans and shirt, unless it is to go to work in an office and will be a suit with tie.

The beret was abandoned in the 50's/60's at the same time hats ran out of fashion.

A striped Matelot shirt and a beret for a male.

There has never been a "national" costume for France, however each region has its own, and these have existed for centuries. Some of the most colourful are those in Alsatia and the ones in Brittany. The mens costumes are more sober than the feminine ones. In the nineteenth century they were used on holidays, and special days such as weddings. In the early twentieth century these customs still existed, but after World War 2, they went into disuse.
Now some areas still have a few days each year when the local celebrations allow for the use of the traditional local costumes.

The famous "french beret" is actually basque. Many older men in both the french and spanish basque country still wear it. As do other elderly men, in their seventies and over, in other parts of the country; (you can still see a few sitting at a café at the Aperitif hour with a beret on their heads and a glass of "pastis" in front of them!)
As to the young, as other answers have said the beret went out of fashion at the same time that the rest of mens hats did, back in the late fifties.
The "national" costume for men nowadays is "international"....
Jeans and a shirt or t-shirt is in style most everywhere in the civilised world!
:-)

France is made of many different regions.
Each region has its own traditional costume.

Otherwise you could say the beret is a kind of national costume... mostly in the minds of foreigners.

Very few ppl in France really wear a beret (except for war veterans at Armistice Day events). Though there is no official national costume of France for men, if there were one, it would be a fitted dress shirt with open collar, a pair of cotton trousers, and a leather jacket. And no sneakers except for tradesmen.

There is regional costume but no national costume.
If there would be one could be this one of this commercial for a french parfum of Jean-Paul Gauthier
