What is your favorite lesser known city in France and why?

I'm planning a trip and I want to know what, besides the obvious, I shouldn't miss or that I might want to go out of my way to see.
Additional Details
restaurant recommendations are always very much appreciated, so if you have a favorite please include it in your reply!

My favourite city is Paris, but as for lesser known, I'd have to say Strasbourg. It's not that little known, but it is very pretty. It is in France, but close to the German border, and has the typical German style of achetecture. A good way to get to see the city is to take a boat cruise from "Le Port Autononime de Strasbourg". There is a very good resturaunt called Le Corde à Linge (The clothes line). It serves a type of pasta that the Région D'Alsice is famous for. I don't remember exactly where it is, but it is near the docks of le port autonime de Strasbourg.

I love Nantes. It is wonderful. it's like the 6th or 7th largest city, used to be the capital of brittany way back in the day, they have a chateaux right in the city (not outside),a cathedral, opera, old towns, it is big enough to have great things to do, yet small enough to really get to know. Lovely rivers and parks. there is a university and a lot of young life...a lot of art going around. it's only like 30-40 minutes west by train to the beach, like 30 or 40 minutes to the east to the bigger and popular loire valley castles, and only (almost) 2 hour train ride to paris. beautiful river and just culture. look it up. wikipedia or whatever else. It has been voted most livible, well-liked and expanding city in france for a few years now. very green too. great transportation.

oh and also a lot of cute villages and towns nearby to take daytrips. example...clisson.

I second the answerer above me who said Nantes. Not because I have been there (though I wish I coud live there *sigh*) but because my friend lives in Nantes and he has told me all about how cool it is. Have fun on your trip! ^^
Salut :D

Marseilles.

I used to live there for a couple of years, and was often heard to say that "the best-kept secret in France is the quality of life in Marseilles".

Cultural life: theatres, ballet, opera, movies, you name it.

Sandy beaches: a bus or an underground ride away.

Skying: in winter, you can go skying by train on a Sunday morning and be back home for dinner.

Accessible places: Cassis and the Calanques, the Provence around and the Alpilles not far away, the South Coast (Nice, Cannes, Grasse) less than 2 hours away.

Restaurants: Le Miramar (pricey) on the Vieux Port, for the best bouillabaise in town; Le Maraval, rue Maraval for probably the best couscous North of the Mediterranee. (You wont spend thousands on wine here, its alcohol-free and you can only order water, tea of soft drinks).
