What it is more convenient a mediocre hotel in Paris the Opera Garnier or a good one near La Defense area ?

Totally go for the convenient mediocre one. You won't be spending that much time in it anyway. Seriously. It's close enough to line 3 that you can take the metro anywhere, and it's actually near enough to a lot of stuff that you can just walk to it, even if you stay out past the time the metro stops running.

You'll have a much better time there. Trust me.

La Defense is terrible and highly depressing. Avoid at (almost all costs).
Opera is one of the nicest neighbourhood in Paris but one of the most expensive too.
I would recommend something in between in the southern half of Paris near Place d'Italie for example where it would be less expensive and still close to the center. If you are a nightbird, you should find something around Bastille. There are some good rates around here and it's a great place to go out at night.

If those were my only two options I'd say the hotel near the Opera Garnier, but I'd also be tempted to answer neither. Unless you are going to La DÃ©fense for business, which is a business center with high rise buildings, a mall and modern architecture (and modern street art if you are interested in paying a short visit), I don't know why anyone would want to stay there. It can also be a little scary at night.

If you are going to Paris for tourism, definitely stay in central Paris. But the Opera district, although undoubtedly nice, is one of the most expensive ones real-estate wise, and not the most central either for sightseeing (although a million times better than La DÃ©fense!) so you could probably find a less "mediocre " hotel in the 4th to 6th arrondissements for the same price. The 1st arrondissement (Louvre) is similar to the Opera Garnier district (posh & expensive) but at least it is a little more central. Unless you are on a honeymoon/anniversary trip or anything like that, your only criteria should be location & cleanliness. There is so much to do and see that you won't want to spend much time in your room anyway so room size and amenities are not that important.

What is the purpose of your trip and what kind of atmosphere are you looking for? What price range? There are several decent hotels under 100 â‚¬/night for a double room in great, central locations.

If you're going for tourism, then I can state from personal experience that it is much better to stay close to the sites you want to see. Otherwise, you spend too much time traveling between the tourist area and your hotel.

If you're going for business in the La Defense area, then you might want to stay close by there instead.

La Defense is like the 'downtown' area of many US cities - therefore, its not a great place to stay unless you are there on business. Without doubt, go for the Garnier area - the old architecture, the historic streets and the great food are all in the city centre.

just opinion...la defense sucks ***...you wanna shop you gotta go to the champs elysees..and it's also closer to everything in central paris
