What should I wear on my trip to Paris that's both comfortable and stylish? Avoid wearing?

My gut reaction is screw the snobs, and wear whatever you want... but, if you want to fit in... here are some tips.

If you are going to wear t-shirts, make sure they are fit/tailored. Don't wear "mens" t-shirts.

Jeans are popular if they are "hip", and size 8 or smaller. I am a bit bigger (ok, much bigger) than that and get weird looks in my Levis 569's as a woman. I think it would be more OK if I was under 20 years old or scrawny.

No white/sports socks. No sneakers. No flip flops. No hiking boots. No Teva's or Birkenstocks.

No fanny packs.

No polyester outfits or american style sports outfits. No sweatpants.

The major way that Americans are noticed in Paris is b/c we are considered loud. Notice on the Metro that although people are talking, including on their cell phones, you can't hear anyone. We could learn from that.

Also, don't eat/drink and walk. Parisiennes seem to always sit to do either of those tasks.

I would bring neutral tone pants: browns, beiges, black.

Now, some warnings: paris is full of dog poo... so watch where you walk.

added note: bring a "cigarette" outfit too - an extra outfit, including jacket, to wear to go out on the town that will become saturated with cigarette smoke. You don't want to have your only warm outfit smelling of cigarettes, so it's good to have an outfit to wear for those occasions

I've been to Paris several times, and the thing that screams "tourist" to me are athletic shoes! Find some comfortable shoes and wear them for a few weeks before you go to break them in and to make sure you can walk all day in them. Sandals are fine for day and night. Shorts aren't all that popular in the city, but jeans are OK. As are skirts and tees.

Just don't wear offensive t-shirts that say things like "Texas is bigger than France" or something like that. You'll probably find that the touristy sections of Paris are not bastions of style, so anything goes. You might want to wear covered shoes for general protection and keeping your feet clean.

Go with your dark & neutral colors to fit in. Stick with fabrics that don't wrinkle.. if you're doing the tourist thing during the day, wear something comfortable but bring a spare set of shoes that are dressier but still comfortable for the night time.

see you there!! i'll be there july 4-12...i'm having the same thoguhts. Last time i was there it was colder and I wore pants and sweatshirt everyday and carried an umbrella

I think everyone else has given good advice but I'd also like to add on some things to not wear: shorts (not at all popular in Europe and this is one easy way to make yourself look like a tourist) and sneakers (not ones you would use for sports anyway... but nicer ones like vintage pumas, etc. are ok). =)

I would wear just a Parka. Nothing else really, the French will notice but they won't say anything. Make it a really nice one with the fur lining to cover the stylish and comfortable part.

And I would avoid wearing just paint of any kind. Although Krylon Spray Paint still comes in a wonderful variety of colors.

Stick to very classic tailored clothes in nuetral colours - once you get there you can see what the latest look is and adapt your wardrobe around it and best of all buy new clothes! lol

As for shoes steer clear of sneakers - cute comfy ballet flats are probably a much safer option!

And don't take any stilleto's - they don't mix well with cobblestones!

Well considering the French drink their own pee, it doesn't really matter if you have style or not...the men will still try to pee on you, and the women will ...yup..they'll try to pee on you too.

No shorts, white socks and running shoes for God's sake. That screams "I'm an American tourist!!!!" Jeans work best, although slightly uncomfortable and warm, tight low cut jeans work best. Shoe wise, get yourself some Puma-like casual shoes or sandals. No T-shirts unless tailored to fit your curves. Have fun, Paris is fantastic! HINT: Have a drink at the cafe inside the Museum at Trocadero (it has an outdoor patio that overlooks the Eiffel Tower & its quite chic).
