Ok, the camera is not such a big thing. You should hold on to that instead of putting in in a purse or backpack.
My travel rule of thumb is: never put anything in my purse/bag that I'm not willing to lose.
The cash is the bigger problem. I have a money belt that ties around my waist and the pocket slides under my jeans. That's where I put all my money, credit cards, AND passport (I never leave my passport in the hotel).
I keep enough cash in my front jeans pocket to get me through lunch - about 30 euros since I pay for bigger purchases with my credit card.
Once that's depleted, I usually go to the ladies room and take out enough cash to last me through the afternoon. |

A fanny pack is *not* a good idea. For one, it marks you as a tourist, and secondly, most can be easily removed by cutting the strap with a razor blade or easily emptied by cutting the pocket with same. The site below has a variety of bags, wallets, etc for you to examine; some are reinforced to prevent cutting. |

Put your passport, cash, credit cards in a money pouch and hang it around your neck & under your clothes.
As for your camera.. sling the bag across your chest and always have your camera over your leg.. not at your hip. Get a complicated case that can't just be opened easy. |

I think the best bet is a money belt close to your body for the money and maybe a camera case diagonally across your body (You can always put some of your money in there but I wouldn't put all of it). Basically you want it close to your body so you can feel it if someone tries to get in it. |

Go to a luggage store and get a good money belt. This is about the only safe way. |

you can be secure and carry you money via travelers express so no one can take it and carry a bag that goes around your neck and shoulders so everything is in sight |

A Fanny Pack. Or A Discoverers Wallet that straps to the stomach and back. |

I was in Paris in 2000 and I carried a big coach bag. I NEVER was treated rudely or had any problems with pick pockets. Walking around in Paris is like anywhere else in the world, Be comfortable .... much like walking around in New York or any big city you must be careful of your belongings but not paranoid. People are courteous and want to be friendly, if you behave appropriately. |
