I agree with the idea of travelling light. Avoid carrying anything that will not fit in your pockets. Paris is full of pickpockets and carrying a purse, backpack, or worst of all - a fanny pack is asking for trouble.
All you really need is money, metro tickets, and a map. Leave the tour book, water bottle, and all that other stuff behind.
A small camera and possible a cell phone would be handy (assuming you have someone to call). Just be sure before you bother with the cell phone that it is compatible with the European networks. Many US phones do not. |

let me warn you: my family owns an apartment in Paris, and I would NOT do what some of these answers have said. The worst thing to see if American tourists in Paris carrying backpacks and a water bottle. The French love making fun of these peopl (and so do we). I would recommend bringing a small map that will fit in your purse, maybe a small dictionary if you aren't very good at French, some money, and ATM card, and if you're going sightseeing a camera. Oh yeah if you have a cell phone probably that. |
