What to bring....? What to give......? |
I'm traveling to Spain and France this summer with my local highschool. During our stay in France we will be hosted by a French Family for five days of our stay. We need to give our host family a gift, but i have no idea what they would be in need of or be interested in. Also, I was wondering how much cash i should bring with me. I have a debit account set up, but making transactions abroad means that there will be a fee. As part of our trip, breakfast and dinner are included, as well as hotels, and most sight-seeing trips. We will be staying in Spain and France for about 16 days. Lunch is not included, nor are the Eiffel Tower Tickets. Another very broad question i have is about how much clothing i should pack. Any other suggestions......? |

Pack enough underwear and socks for the duration of your stay. Pack 2 pairs of good jeans, a pair of shorts and something kind of dressy if you want to go out at night. Also pack a pair of good walking shoes. Traveller's tip..wrap some duct tape around the end of a pen... if you get a blister cover it w/ tissue and tape and cover the abbrasive part of your shoe w/ the tape as well. Both Spain and France will be warm in the summer but pack a light jacket cause in France it gets cool at night. Don't forget your camera.
As far as a gift goes... why not give them something that's a local specialty in your city or state?
Money...best to take money out at ATM's. Set a budget for yourself...ie 50 euros a day. The ATM will charge you but you get a better exchange rate than if you were to physically exchange money.
Try to see Paris at night... magic!
Have fun! |

Wow, I'm trying to remember what I gave my host family when I went. I do remember what I got when we hosted a French student. He gave me a French musical groups record ( ok, dating myself there ) and he gave my parents a nice bottle of armagnac and a bottle of nutella ( they didnt have it here in the states yet ). In any case, I was perfectly content with what I got, it doesnt have to be fancy, just thoughtful. As for money, thats another hard one. When I went we stayed with a family for the entire time aside from the first few days when we were in Paris so money really wasnt a concern. And clothes... again, thats up to you. |

It's not a question of what they might need. Just a small gift that shows you've given it some thoght, maybe something local to your area, the sort of thing you'll find in souvenir shops in your home town.I've had maple syrup from Canada, a Dutch cheese from Holland, and table mats with local scenes from England.
As for money I'm sure your high school has some recommendations on the amount. It causes jealousy if some have a lot and others much less money to spend. For lunches you can easily get something to eat on the street, sandwiches, kebabs, all sorts of things. 10 euros a day is plenty for that. The Eiffel tower is cheaper if you climb the stairs :-)
Can't give you any advice on clothes, the females in my life always seem to take loads but it depends if you have the chance to do some laundry. |

For your money, I don't know how much do you plan to spend. Anyway the easiest solution is to have a international credit card as VISA or other. Cash machines are much more used in Europe than in the US. Most people pay directly with card when it is more than 15 Euros.
For your closes, I depends where you go. France and Spain are the two biggest Western European countries, so the climate can vary : you may have 18°C-25°C in northern France, Western France and North-western Spain. You can also be around 25°C-30°C in the rest of France, and maybe more in the south (30-35°C). In central and southern Spain It can be more hot (Beetween 35°C and 40°C, maybe more in andalucia... very hot ! But it can be cool nights. |
