Paris is a very safe city. Most crime within the city is against property, not people - you might get pickpocketed, but you're unlikely to be injured in any way.

On my last trip, I stayed in Hotel Residence du Palais. It wasn't bad if you don't mind sharing a toilet with other guests on the same floor. Just take some lysol wipes...The cost was 54 euros per night, which worked out to be about $75 a night. This is definitely a NO FRILLS kind of place though. There's not even a lobby! No phone or clock in the rooms, either. However, it's in a really good location directly across the street from Luxembourg garden and a few blocks from several metro/rer stations. A bus stops directly across the street from the hotel, too. Good cafe next door.

Another relatively inexpensive place that I stayed was the Hotel Magendie. When I stayed there, it was about $90 per night. The rooms were small, but had totally private bathrooms like American hotels do. There is a lobby, and a breakfast room. The front desk people speak English well. It is conveniently located to several metro stops, is just off a main boulevard, lots of places to eat, etc.

Another hotel that I've stayed at is Appart Valley Austerlitz. This one is more expensive, but the rooms are like efficiency apartments. I liked being able to prepare some of my own meals. McDonalds is very close; Jardin des Plantes is across the street; and a major train station is a block away. The rue Mouffetard market is within walking distance, as is a host of places to eat/drink/shop. I think I paid about $110 per night there.

Try one of the hostels. I hope you don't get killed in a horrific fashion like the movies.
