What would two American women like from France ? |
I'm French and I'll be spending next month in NYC with an American family. I'd like to bring gifts that they would appreciate, but I'm not sure what to choose. There's a chocolate maker in my town so I though about bringing them his chocolates... What do you think ? Any better idea ?
Thanks in advance, the French-American relations are at stake !! Just kidding :)
(And no, I'm not bringing a white flag. :P) |

There are restrictions on certain foods and you have to sign a declaration on the plane that you are not importing meat, fruit, and some dairy products such as cheese that is not in hermetically sealed containers. If you take that sort of thing and you are randomly picked for a check by customs, they will be confiscated, but chocolates are OK, and they will not melt or be damaged if you pack them in the luggage that is kept in the hold. Since most chocolates sold in the USA are industrially made Americans drool over the sort from proper chocolatiers.
Another possibility is something that is typically French like a small piece of Moustier pottery, Limoges china, Bacccarat vase/ crystal animal like a swan , etc... which you would find in shops that have "listes de mariage". I know they are costly but the smaller objects are the same price as a box of luxury chocolates. One American family I stayed with was absolutely enchanted by a doll in Breton costume (not a tacky one) that I offered as they have nothing like that in America and it is a curiosity. That sort of thing has staying power, and you know, they like to tell to their friends who comment on the unsusual object that it is a "real French" object. Handpainted silk scarves are also popular.
Perfume is difficult to chose for someone else. Perhaps one of those boxes that have am assortment of several mini bottles?

You should bring them cloths or something that people in france find as luck. |

I think you should just bring the chocolates. You are the real gift. I'm sure you'll be kind and interesting and fun, right?! The memories! Peace. :) |

I, personally would love the chocolates, but tastes and allergies vary. If you can inquire ahead of time about the preferences of your hosts, that would be best. One disadvantage to chocolate is that if they are stored in a warm climate (like on a plane) is that it can develop an unappetizing white haze from the chocolate "sweating."
Other possibilities might be something else from the area you live in. For instance, if I was coming to visit you I might bring a vase from a potter I know here in town, possibly some maple sugar candies because they travel well and are one thing New England is known for, or perhaps an art book about my town, region or state. |

Any good speciality from your local area, eg olive oil, the chocolate. Also linens, pottery, soap etc. These are what I collect when I'm in france. |

What about something that like a bag of Herbes de Provence, or a jar of local Dijon mustard? |

Hm - you could bring them macarons (moi, j'sais pas où tu habites, mais qch comme Jean Trogneux - ou bien Ladurée - serait parfait), or you could give them clothing (scarves, purses, etc.) parce qu'à vrai dire, je pense que toutes les filles américaines aiment la mode française ! Or even bring them some music; they might like (depending on their ages) BB Brunes, Alizée, Renan Luce, Superbus, Yelle, or Carla Bruni (on l'aime tellement aux States !)
Hope it helps, and have fun =] |

How about perfume that you can't get in American. Chocolates would be great too. |

Well, first off, America is not a nation of fat bastards who eat chocolate, chips, pizza, ice cream, etc. all day while sitting at home in their comfortable chairs, which have been marked with that persons body print, and are on the computers 24/7 or watch television... That false accusation is just ridiculous! Where did you hear that from?? HAHAHAHA ;) I'm just messing with you
Try something made in France (almost like a souvenir) that would come from the heart(i guess you could say) and mean something. Women do like clothes..so that's another possibility |
