Whats best to do and see in Montpellier, south of France ?

Im going to stay in a small village near Montpellier in August. What interesting sights are in the area. Any good restaurants?

The Montpellier area is a wonderful place to explore, especially in the summer. The Place de la Comedie is the center of the pedestrian area--part of what is considered to be the "old city." I particularly enjoyed the many walking tours available in Montpellier--you are taken through the history of the city, from the Roman times to today. Many great restaurants there, too.

Also, if you're in a village, I am assuming you will have a car. If not, there is a decent bus system, but it is really helpful to have your own transport in the area. Besides the beaches, it's nice to explore the area. Within very easy drives you have Aix-en-provence, towns like Arles (where Van Gogh famously went to "recover" and became the setting for most of his famous paintings) and Avignon (where there is an incredible huge theatre festival every summer). The coastal towns and villages are also very worth exploring.

Have a wonderful time!

Montpellier is a sweet and sunny town; the beach (La Grande Motte) and the sea are near (25 kilometers)
The best to see in Montpellier : the Comedy Place (la place de la comédie)
