Whats good to see within 70 miles of Calais?

Going on a booze cruise and I get the tunnel back the same day.
Have done Bruges, Bolougne, Dunkirk and Cap Gris Nez (I like my war stuff!) in previous trips.

(Especially interested to hear from any tips from the French) although all welcome

Le Touquet, it has a traditional sea port so in the evening you can enjoy superp locally caught lobster/fish etc. It has an excellent big, clean beach, (the Paris plage) and an upmarket modern town with designer outlets. Straight down the motorway from Calais and your're there.

You don't mention Lille, so I'm assuming you haven't been there. I enjoyed it when I went there- lots of Flemish architecture in the old historic part of town.

We have often done day trips to Calais to stock up on wine and French food. We would take the early morning crossing, then travel to Bruges for lunch and a nice afternoon. You can drive to Bruge in under an hour from Calais, and it is a really beautiful city. On a fine day, you can take a boat trip along the canals (Its called The Venice of the North). We would head back to Calais in the late afternoon and go to the shopping centre or hypermarket. We would then visit the Old Town of Calais, which has a number of really nice restaurant and have dinner before taking a crossing back to England about 9pm. You should try it - its a great way to spend a day! Enjoy!

Lille, one of the larger French cities might be worth a look. Especially if you want to see a "typical" French city rather than a city overrun with tourists. There are some English tourists there and many take advantage of the great prices and selection at hypermarkets like Auchan. There is also a fine arts museum there. Eating out (especially if you like French food) can be a great experience (and not as expensive as Paris)too. If you know some French, it helps bc fewer ppl in Lille speak English (compared to Paris). Many times, if you try to speak French and if the French person knows some English, they'll help you out by giving the reply in English.
