apply for the sorbonne classes of french civilization. it's pennies compared to bigger language schools (ie eurocentres or ils), but you have to look for your own housing (which is fairly easy in paris, to be honest. look for the Fusac magazine and start calling).
you'll have to do the carte de sejour procedure like everyone else. it doesn't entitle you to work for which you have to get another permit. that one's definetly harder.
oh and don't listen to the previous answer. yes, there's people who hate americans, but the loud, frat-like ones that come and trash the city. for the same token, a polite american has no problems. and on the second subject, if they charge you more they're not doing it because you're american, it's just what's plain and simply called a 'tourist trap', whether you're from the us, australia, china or wherever. |

The easiest way is register as a student in a language school such as at the Sorbonne or the Alliance Francaise. There are less expensive schools. Just do a web search on french language schools. Once you register, they'll help you with a student visa. They can help you out with housing. You could sign up for a month of housing, and during that time look for something cheaper elsewhere.
Getting a job is more complicated. If you're not from the European Union, you need to get a job before you go. You wouldn't be able to get a work visa without a job already lined up. You could search monster.fr for possibilities. If you don't speak French well enough to get a regular French job, do a search on monster.fr on the world English, and you'll get a list of jobs that are appropriate for English speakers. |

Anywhere outside Paris is going to be cheaper, try the other large cities, Lyon, Bordeaux have a choice of language schools.
Once you are enrolled in a school you can get a student visa, which means you can get a limited work permit (for a job working a few hours a week) the most common way is an au pair.
Search the web for au pair agencies, and language schools. |

with a friend, or a family that you know over there, and dont mention you are american, because then they will charge you more, there are alot of people there who hate americans. |
