If you have frequent flyer miles, use them! Or if you know someone who has them, beg them! Other than that, if you know anyone who works for an airline, they could extend their benefits of flying standby meaning it's not confirmed and if there are seats available once everyone boards then you can get on. If you want to get a good purchase price, you can put yourself at the mercy of wholesale bulk tickets. You can usually buy these through travel agents. But beware such tickets are fairly restricitve

Tickets seem to be cheapest in late fall or late winter avoding any holidays espcially New Years. August is the most expensive month. Fly on wednesday too.
