Where and How Much to Tip in Paris? |
Can I get some guidelines of where and how much to tip in Paris?
Waiters? Concierges? The ladies who make up my room? (wait until last day? or tip every morning?)

Restaurant menus have TTC written at the bottom meaning taxes and service charges are included.
People working in service industries in France like waiters are professionals, they are properly paid, respected and do not depend on tips like in America. You can tip for excellent service but you have already paid for it. |

In French restaurants, there are 2 situations: TTC (toutes taxes compris-- all taxes and tips included in the bill) aka "Service Compris" (tip included in the bill, no need for extra tipping) or they will calculate say 15 or 18% of the bill and include it in the total. No European (French or others) would pay a tip on top of that. Some tricky waiters will hope that you will pay another 15% on top of the 15% ("SERVICE" is the French word). Hardly anyone tips extra-- just tourists. Occasionally, someone will leave a few coins for really good service.
Also, by law, the restaurant MUST provide you with a carafe of tap water for FREE (un carafe d'eau) if you order food. You are not required to buy a beverage. And French law requires that the menu be posted at the entrance of the restaurant. Another hint: the word "entree" on the menu refers to what we call the appetizer and is not the main dish.
Concierges, maids, etc. are almost never tipped. If the concierge does something for you such as buy a ticket, then 10% of the value of the ticket can be given as a tip. Restroom attendants are typically NOT tipped. The cost of using the restroom is usually posted and this is to use the restroom (e.g. in a dept. store). In some malls, you pay the attendant the fee and he will give you a token ("jeton") to use on the pay toilet stall. |

tip people of it id worth it. cleaning lady not more than 5 euros.
doorman one or 2 euros at the hotel.
restaurants : french are usually lousy tippers , but i usually stick to a maximum of 10% of the tab not like in the US, and if you are not happy about the service, don't tip.
taxis : you can give him the spare change on the fare that rounds up to the higher figure. i.e if the fare is 5.90, tell him to keep 7 euros. if it is 5.10, round it up to 6.

just tip if you are happy with the service, a lot of places build it in to the price, a tip is a reward for good service not an obligatory action to be preformed by you the customer |

You should tip the ladies who make up your room about 1 euro per day, paid daily (it may not be the same person every day, so that's why to give it daily).
Waiters -- service is included in your bill. I always round up to the next euro, and if I get exceptionally good service I'll leave another euro or two.
Concierge -- I think 10% of the cost of whatever they helped you with is customary, but I could be wrong. I don't typically stay at hotels that have a concierge.
Taxis - round up and add a couple of euros, especially if they take your bags to the front door. They won't be insulted if you give more, of course!
Restroom attendants - a few coins up to 1 euro. |

Waiters in Cafés are so arrogant and rude in Paris the last thing you want is to tip them, however should this happen, for a typical lunch meal at a restaurant or Café, Tips range from € 1 ( not really satisfied ) to € 5 ( great service ), the most common being € 2 or €2.5 .Usually concierges don't get any tip nor do maids, unless you require their help for an unusual situation, in that case feel free to tip them ! |
