I live in Los Angeles and we've had huge demonstrations for 2 days here too. Life goes on. So far there haven't been any reasons to fear trouble. All the demonstrations here or in Paris have been lawful and under control. I doubt that there will be any generalized riots or anything like that. Keep an eye on it but go about your business if you were planning to travel.
As far as shopping, the whole area surrounding Les Halles is a good bet, starting with the mall itself (inside Les Halles; metro station by the same name). Boulevard Saint Michel in the Quartier Latin can be interesting too. But as you wander around you'll notice other great shopping opportunities all over the place. Even Champs Elysees shops have amazing sales all the time. Don't be afraid to explore.

For souvenirs, I would hit up Rue de Rivoli (across from the Louvre; metro: Tuileries) and near Notre Dame Cathedral.

Otherwise, there is a great shopping mall at La Defense...just take the metro to the end of the line: Line #1 toward La Defense, off at La Defense. You can get to the mall without even leaving the metro. There is a nice store, Auchan, which is sort of like our Wal-Mart Super Center.

Champs-Elysses is also a nice place to shop. While Louis Vuitton and Cartier are on this street, there are a few other shops that are affordable.

If you have the money, shop on the Champs Elysees

For more reasonable prices, head down the Rue de Rivoli alongside the Louvre where you will find the chain and department store
