Argeles sur Mer SE of Perpignon, Open sandy beaches and rocky coves towards the Spanish Border.

I love IIe de Porquerolles. It is a beautiful island and i spent about 4 days there. It took about 45mins from Toulon by ferry. The water is so clear blue and what can i say, it was just so awesome. We went trekking, fishing and canoeing and finally swimming in the beautiful sea. A perfect holiday, that's for sure.

Most of the beaches along the 'Cote D'Azur' are stony, or artificial sand, or private where you have to take out a second mortgage to lie on a sweaty beach lounger and pay a fortune for a drink. You also have to lie so close to the other people that you can smell their sun cream and other bodily odours - not pleasant considering that the French have a deserved reputation for being slightly less than careful about personal hygiene.

You also are exposed to the unappealing sight of fat middle aged and elderly people (of both sexes) flaunting their bloated wrinkled bodies in the tiniest of costumes (or less!). In fairness I must add that the worst offenders in this regard are not the French. French women in particular starve themselves to try to be thin and end up with that pinched crinkled look and flabby breasts. They also walk around as if they have a bad smell under their nose, which is likely to be the case, and often make themsleves look worse by chain smoking.

This overrated, overcrowded, overpriced, and over-developed region is the 'trou de cul' (a***hole) of France and much of the population are what one might expect to find in such a place.

The public beaches are often dirty, covered in litter and dogshit, and it is not unusual for people to find used syringes or condoms on them.

There is also the problem of access. Inadequate public transport, taxis cost a fortune, and road access during the summer is a nightmare, with horrendous traffic jams, aggressive and dangerous driving, kids screeching around on motor scooters, difficult parking plus the high risk that when you get back to your car it will have been broken into, vandalised, stolen, or ticketed.

As you go further west, the beaches improve, and as someone else said, the Camargue has some wonderful beaches and is a beautiful region. (ssshhh - we want it to stay that way)

The Atlantic coast has the best beaches but the water is cold, however it's clear and relatively unpolluted, more than one can say for the Mediterranean.

I would say Antibes, Nice is not that good because this is a beach with rocks instead of sand!

Nice is a bag of dirt, it is covered in rocks, no sand, look around it has dog poo graffiti, although the water is a lovely blue, but in Cagnes sur mer( 2 mile from Nice) they have a sewerage treatment plant and all the waste is transported 2 mile out to sea...
I think try the west

France is OK but England is best for beaches - and we are having sizzling weather just now. The North East coast, particularly Bamburgh, beats any other beach I've ever been on - and I have been all round the world!
