Some tips you can look up:

Rue de Rennes on the 6th arrd. is quite big and full of shops, from montparnasse to st.-germain-des-pres (zara, hm, agathe, armani, louis vuitton, burberry, dior, etc.)

Rue Fbg St.-Honore is parallel to the Champs elysees on the 8/1 arrondisements and is the high end area (only designer).

Grands Boulevards area (Rue des Capucines specifically), from the madeleine to the opera (9th arrd) are also a brilliant area and end up on the Galeries Lafayette (which is right behind the opera). also, the avenue de l'opera has quite a bit of stores going south to the palais royal and in front of the louvre.

From there, you can walk east through the Rue de Rivoli, which also has some pretty good shops going up to the Hotel de Ville.

If you feel like going into the marais (4 arrd), the rue des francs-bourgeois leading up to the place des vosges are quite uncommon and not franchised, so everything there is pretty much exclusive.

Finally, taking the metro line 10 to Sevres Babylone you can go to Le Bon Marche, which is the true department store in paris (although it's terribly expensive).

And as a tip, by no means go shopping on the Champs-Elysees. it's overrated, expensive, touristy, dirty and annoying.

For the really expensive and fancy designers, try Avenue George V, and the area around it.

there is a cool lower price place called Tati. I heard about it on Globe Trekker.

If you are looking for hype :
Colette, 213 rue St Honoré, by the Tuileries is THE concept store that all the hype brands want to work with when launching a product (Cacharel, Sony...).
It really is a MUST SEE. Check their website to get the idea.

i agree with MMOhio. although very expensive; also Le Printemps, next to galeries LaFayette. try also the Forum des Halles (it's easy to find, it's off of rue de Rivoli)
