Where is El Sass Lorraine, France?

I don't know if I am spelling it right, but I heard it was on the border between France and Germany. I can't read French and can't find it on the map but I want to know more about where it is.

Alsace-Lorraine (French: Alsace-Lorraine; German: Elsass-Lothringen) was a territory disputed between the nation states of France and Germany. The territory, composed of Alsace and parts of Lorraine originally belonging to the Holy Roman Empire, but was gradually ceded to France since Peace of Westphalia in 1648. After the Franco-Prussian War, the Treaty of Frankfurt ceded these parts to the newly-founded German Empire in 1871. It was restored to France after World War I by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. It was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1940, and again reverted to French control in 1945.

The territory was made up of 93% of Alsace (7% of Alsace remained French) and 26% of Lorraine (74% of Lorraine remained French). Because of historical reasons, specific legal dispositions are still applied in the territory, now known legally as Alsace-Mose

I live in the South of France and I wonder what makes Sjfoulds make such remarks - France has the Alps (best skiing in the world) the Mediteranean the Pyrenese the Atlantic - Paris (most visited city in the world) The fastest trains the best road network the best food the best wine the best perfume etc............... The below link will tell you plenty about Alsace Lorraine and very beautiful it is too - plenty of Beer and Sourkrout !

Alsace Lorraine, two regions in North Eastern France which have been subject to a tug of war between France and Germany for centuries. In German these regions are known as Elsass and Lothringen. Wiki has a little map and summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsace

It should read: Alsace-Lorraine, the scenes of some of the greatest (as in tragic) trench warfare battles during the first world war. There is a great song/poem about the area called 'The Green Field of France' worth reading off the net.

The Alsace-Lorraine is a region in the german border. It's culture is similar to the german culture, you can eat Choucroute, the french Sauerkraut, the local language (which is disapearing) is germanic, not latin. It has belonged to both countries, and it is now in France.

I think Elsäß is the german way of spelling it.

Alsace Lorraine

...the Heart of Europe
A visit to Alsace is more than just a vacation. It's a journey back in time. In Alsace, past and present are woven together in the fabric of everyday life. Here, you'll discover ruined castles and cosmopolitan cities...taste wine from centuries-old vineyards and savor gourmet cuisine...explore Gothic churches and friendly, half-timbered villages. Long considered a microcosm of Europe, Alsace has a unique French and German heritage that is evident in its food, folklore and festivities.

View Alsace's lush foothills and valleys from a "hot air balloon." Venture into Alsace's many enchanting "natural parks." Watch the sun set over the Vosages mountains. Take a leisurely tour through the "Rts des Vins,"or historic wine roads.

No trip to Alsace would be complete without a walking tour of historic "Strasbourg," home of the majestic "Cathedral Notre Dame" and"La Petit France," the oldest and most beautifully preserved area of the city. And don't miss the beautiful town of "Colmar," with its medieval architecture, sculptured gables and fairytale houses. For car afficionados, the "Schlumpf Car Collection" at the "National Car Museum" is a must-see. And be sure to make time for the "Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle," one of the most popular attractions in Alsace.

To truly experience Alsace, you'll want to stay more than a day or two. Start your journey by referring to the travel packages, car rentals, tour itineries, interactive maps and event calendars listed on this site.
