For something romantic, for shopping, for culture: Paris
For A nice, calm cultural city you will fall in love with in the southern Provence:

AVIGNON

especially if you go during july!

Take a look at the pictures in the links below and you will just love it.

A nice city in the middle of Provence, known for quite a few things:

- The Palace of the popes

- The "Pont d'Avignon" The bridge that inspired the famous French song of the same name.

- The "festival d'Avignon" Which lasts 3 weeks in July, its is for theatric plays for Avignon what the movie festival is for Cannes. Lesser known than its counterpart, but street plays and comedies, clowns, jugglers and other street performers make the city an amazing attraction.

- The special wine. One of the popes liked a wine soo much he bought the territory near orange 45 mins car from avignon) making Avignon the only city with an enclave (territory not adjacent to the city) also, the palace grows a very small vineyard of this wine on the palace cliffs and each year there is a celebration for the papal wine. Until the revolution the territory belonged to the pope, just like the Vatican!

You also have the University (ancient hospital) which was dubbed one of the most beautiful in France and inaugurated by Chirac, and many other historical artifacts and stories.

The entire city center is enclosed in a 5km long city wall, and the "papal gardens are unique, they are on a cliff above the river, the city and the palace itself, offering a round the clock view on the whole city.

There are many things to do, and it is close to many other cities such as Montpellier, Aix en Provence, Nimes (the famous "lets let the bulls loose in the street thing"), Marseilles, Cannes, Lyon... just an hour away from Italy and 2 away from Spain (Barcelona) Is situated in Provence which is, ma foi, on of the most sought after locations to live in.

Paris, like NY and London are world class cities and IMHO is a must see city. You could spend 2 weeks in Paris and still feel that you need to come back and see more. Versailles which is outside of Paris is a memorable place as well. Yeah, a lot of tourists go there but that's because it's a beautiful place to visit.

Every french will support his/her city with this kind of question and you won't have any objective answer. I just advise you to read a guidebook about France full of pictures. In this way, you will find which cities could interest you. Because there's something everyone will agree on: the french cities are all different and most of them are interesting.

macho_bob
ewwww, France. lol. Hmmm, I guess Paris would be good. I imagine even if you don't speak the language you could manage there because if it is so touristy then many people will already speak english.

Go to Biarritz in the south west of France it's beautiful and if you like surf it's wonderful. My husband is from NY and when he saw my home town (Biarritz of course) he decided to move there.
Take care

It depends on your interests.

I'd say :

1. PARIS
2. LYON
3. NICE
4. AVIGNON
5. AIX EN PROVENCE
6. STRASBOURG
7. MARSEILLES
8. LILLE
9. BORDEAUX
