Where is a good hotel to stay in Paris?

I want to take my wife to Paris this March for her birthday. Can anyone recommend a good 3 star hotel near the Eiffel Tower? We have never been to Paris before. Please - sensible replies only.

I really liked our stay that Ste. Germain - it's a best western hotel (go figure that best westerns are nicer outside of the US). Anyways, it was near 2 subway stations, walking distance to a Starbucks, clean, cute, polite workers, had a fridge and decent size bathroom with french windows that opened up into the street, television etc...I would also suggest the website, www.tripadvisor.com. I always always always check reviews on that site because anyone and everyone posts and they have mostly been accurate reviews.

Not to pricey either.

Since you want a "sensible" reply here it is.

People are forever asking this question and I always want to ask them "Why do you want to stay "near" the Eiffel Tower?"

Given that 1) Paris is a very compact city and that 2) few buildings are over 6 stories tall 1) half the addresses in the city are "near" the Eiffel Tower and 2) You can see the Eiffel Tower from a vast number of sixth floor windows if they are pointing in the right general direction.

From the center of the city to the Eiffel Tower is an 11 minute ride on the RER/Metro.

So unless you are more specific and insist on being some specific number of meters from the entrance to the tower, I'd suggest the Hotel Left Bank Saint Germain at 9, rue de l'Ancienne Comédie in the 6th arrondissment. A lovely place for a brief romantic stay in Paris. In the heart of the city and within easy reach of every major tourist sight, it is run by Best Western and has all modern amenities. http://www.paris-paris.com/hotel_left-bank_saint-germain.php

I just returned from Paris. Stayed at the Hilton Arc de Triumph. 5 mins walk the the arc and Champ. The hotel is 1st rate, great service. the NBA teams were staying there during their exhibition game in Paris. It has one of the best bars of any hotel I have ever been to and I have been to plenty. Good luck and have a great time

p.s. Ditto about staying near the tower, it is not necessary

we stayed at the Hotel Patria. It is the second to last station for the Metro (line 3). The station is called porte de bagnolet. The town in which the hotel is located in is Bagnolet but because of the metro station so close ( about 2 minutes walking) it is very convienient. IT is pretty cheap and great breakfasts.

We stayed at the Hotel California on Rue de Ecole. It is not near the Eiffel tower, but is in a nice safe neigbourhood, on the left bank, 10 mins walk from Notre Dame cathedral. Not too bad a price. Good restaurants in the area, eat breakfast at the cafe across the street.
