Where is a great place to live in France?

I'm only 17 about to be 18 and I wish to live in France sometime in the future. The thing is that I really want to plan this really well and actually think about it. I hope to be an interior designer and wish to buy a place there. The only thing I have to do is finish school here save up some money and hopefully buy a place in a beautiful city in France.

As far as I am concerned, I would chose to live in the southwest (Charente, Gironde, Lot, Dordogne, Lot & Garonne and Landes. And also the Pays Basque (Pyrénées). Me, I have been living at Andernos, 50 km from Bordeaux (marvellous city!) for 25 years, and this a real paradise. Lovely people, pure nature, marvellous landscape and plenty of opportunities for your job.... You won't be disappointed, for sure!
Welcome in France, foreigner!

I lived in Toulouse, which is in south of France. I'm Canadian, and I lived there for six years ( age 10 to age 16) and the place is great. Toulouse is the perfect place because it's not expensive. It's a classy and very historical place and the people are very friendly. They have excellent universities and it's just a safe, warm place. A lot of people recommend places like Paris and Saint Tropez but Paris is extremely pricey and Saint Tropez is really better for just a holiday. A place like Toulouse or Nice is fantastic! good luck with whatever you do and i hope you enjoy your time in France. It's a great country and I enjoyed living there myself.

Anybody giving advices about living anywhere but in or around a big city is either a retiree or needs to get a clue. You won't find any "advanced" job in France outside the cities. Seriously, who will hire an interior designer in les Landes. In France, only rich people can afford an interior designer and these are not farmers. Consider Paris, Lille, Lyon, Bordeaux and their suburbs... It's a matter of personal preference which city you choose. Paris is the most dynamic because France is very centralized around its capital city. Personally I would avoid the south because of the people there. Look up "beauf" for details.
