I would suggest the Odeon or Saint Michel areas. It is in the center of the city, lots of nice streets for walks in the evenings, easy access to all the other places. Even if you are on a budget, you can find a reasonable price for a hotel there (btw almost all the rooms are small, but you'll spend all the time outside anyway).

lola
You can go to the sea side near Lille or you can stay in the south of France, I mean St. Cyprien.

Vincennes, if you can afford it.

paris
I suggest you hotel Ascot Opera-rue Monsigny. Is very well located so you can enjoy of Paris' s life during all day and night, but is in a very quite areea.

I like the Marais (the 4eme) - it is really convenient to all the major spots and the shops and restaurants are fab. And most of the stores remain open on Sundays (must go to the Marriage Ferrer tea shop).

St. Germain (6eme) is also nice but a bit touristy.

i like st Michele...it's right near Notre Dame. it's full of Moroccan/African restaurants, it's generally less touristy and close by to all the famous sites, you can easily walk to the Louvre along the river. Accommodation is cheaper there too and you can eat well without paying tourist prices.
