One of my favorite places in the French Alps is a town called Annecy. It is built on Lake Annecy. It is small town charm with it's own chateau, a chocolate shop, nice cafes and eating places, cobbled streets, a lovely market with cheeses, french pastries, sausages, etc. etc. There are ski-ing resorts within easy driving distance, Albertville, home of the 1992 winter olympics is 30 min. drive. You can also drive to Geneva, Switzerland in an hour and a half if you are interested.

Megève is a very good place to spend Christmas. it's full of lovely bars, good restaurants and cool shops. There are a few clubs too. But make sure that you have enough money because life there is quite expensive...
