R is right Aix is a lot of fun because of the student population
Rennes is also lively but small, Marseilles is one of teh most popular cities very mixed population but character, the Loire Valley with Orleans or Nantes
Instead of trying too many cities you should choose one or two regions and focus on them, you will get a better taste and feel of life
I also would recommend visiting the Mont St Michel or the Pays Cathares (many castles and cavern with prehistoric paintings), or Vaux le Vicomte one of my favourite castles but there are so many abbeys and castles or places of character, Dordognes is a beautiful region also that you will not be disapointed whatever you choose. |

I recommend the south of France, especially the city of Avignon and the town of Arles. Avignon is gorgeous, and it's booming with culture, especially during its summer festival in July. Arles IS smaller (I think its population is about 30,000?), but don't let that turn you off of it. If you visit there, be sure to stay at Hotel Forum; it's wonderful. Arles is one of the best places I've ever visited. |

Lyon comes immediately to mind. its the second largest metropolitan area (and the third largest city) in France and is pretty much universally recognized as the gastronomic center of France. Its a two hour train ride from Paris.
Aix-en-Provence is a historic city in the south which is also the site of many institutions of higher learning. Its 2h50 from Paris or 1h20 de Lyon. The town was founded about 120 BC and was a center of the Roman administration.
Marseilles, on the Mediterranean coast, was founded by the Greeks in 600 BC. Its the second largest city in France. While the city has something of a dark reputation its old harbour is quite charming and the bouillabaisse, the quintessential fish soup is a super food experience.
Cannes and Nice, on the French Riviera are the archetypal hangouts of the rich and famous. |
