Where to buy an 'American' birthday cake in Paris?

And I don't mean the industrial ones that they sell at the Bon Marché!

you could try LeNotre (av. Victor Hugo Near Place Victor Hugo on the 16eme or on the Champs-Elysees near the presidential palace). It's very expensive (but provided you discard the Grande epicerie you musn't mind), but it's amazingly good.

You could also look at La Duree on the corner of bonaparte and jacob (6eme). same thing as lenotre. the first one has better cakes but both are great stuff.

Here's an idea. Do an image search for birthday cakes and print out a couple different ones. Take them to a local baker or two, and ask what they can do. You're sure to find someone who would enjoy the challenge.
