I happened to be on an airplane flying from Mexico City to Guatemala. The plane was full of French citizens. In fact it seemed I was the only non-French person on board. They had come from France to visit Guatemala for whatever reason. I have never in my life been so shut up with the rudest, most arrogant, nastiest people. I reasoned that somewhere in France there must be some real genuine people, but not on this plane. When we landed, I kept my eye on this imperious blond haired woman. Her regal arrogance was noticeable. She commanded the natives with royal gestures. The indigenous of course rushed to her baggage to carry them to a rip-off taxi. They didn't know a word of French, but they accommodated this lady to get the big tip they would worm out of her, just like they do everyone else that arrives. I laughed because in all her arrogance she could not realize how these little peasants, that she looked down her aquiline nose at, would fleece her every which way but cheap. She thought she was in control and here she was in a strange land at the mercy of everyone. I just shook my head and walked to Zone 1 of the city and took a bus for a few cents to Antigua where I lived for a summer. You've heard the "Ugly American" -- and I've certainly seen them, but this was the Ugly Frenchman in spades. [You have not lived until you are packed like sardines and racing other buses recklessly through the mountains with 300 foot sheer dropoffs, on a narrow mountain road, singing, "Chofer, chofer, más velocidad, chofer, chofer..." Young, crazy and happy. Great memories.] What boggles my mind was that the whole planeful of Frenchmen were just like the woman. I am still trusting that somewhere in the world is a nice Frenchman, but it takes a bit of faith. Smile. |
