A week is not nearly enough! I've been to Paris twice and I still haven't seen it all! I recommend you go to Paris for the week unless you are not interested in big cities, in which case I'd spend a week in Provence or the Riviera. Alres and Avignon are really nice and so are Monte Carlo and Nice. You can take the train between cities. I once did a week in London and on another trip one week in Munich (both in the winter) and I would say that if you only have a week, just pick one town or one small region and stick with that for the week. |

A week is not enough to have a general image of France, even you are "Speedy Gonzales". So, I suggest to go this week in Paris (and you'll have a lot to see, without seeing all), or to go on the Cote d'Azur (from Marseille to Monte Carlo), a gorgeous region. From now, it's your choise and I wish you " Bon voyage!". |

It sort of depends on the kind of things you like, as well as how you plan on getting around.
Do you like the excitement and vibrancy of cities? Then you could easily spend the whole week in Paris and not even begin to scratch the surface of that beautiful place. Aside from doing all the sort of “must do” touristy things (like going to the top of the Eiffel Tower, visiting the Louvre, walking through any of the amazing parks (like the Jardin du Luxembourg), going up to Sacre-Coeur, and seeing Notre Dame, Paris has all kinds of fantastic neighborhoods (like Montparnasse, St. Germain des Pres and the Latin Quarter, Le Marais, Champs-Elysees, and the Ile de la Cite, just to name a few) that are wonderful to explore by foot. Just by wandering around these areas you’ll discover all kinds of things that won’t appear on any tour book. Getting around in Paris is easy thanks to the excellent Metro system (albeit late at night you’ll need to use cabs). Since it’s a world-class city, there are always world-class things going on, so check out some of the English-language papers there for a list of events.
I’d always recommend depth over breadth, which is why I’d focus on just Paris if a week is all you have.
If you want to add more, you’ll sacrifice depth for certain, but you can have a great time anyway. And exactly where you head depends on your interests. One thing I did a couple years ago that was GREAT was flying to Paris and renting a car at the airport and headed south along the Rhone River. I stopped in Lyon, Dijon, Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, and got all the way to Stes. Marie de la Mer, checking out perfectly wonderful things on the way. It was the fall, so the vineyards were spectacular to see, all bright and orange in their autumn hues. Using a car is easy in France, but you can also use the high-speed TGV to get from place to place where it provides service.
But again, if I had just a week for your trip, I’d stay in Paris. You won’t be bored, that’s for certain, and you also won’t feel like you’re spending all your time just getting from place to place.
Have a great time! |
