The law now requires children up to the age of 12 to have a proper car seat for them.
They must always be placed safely in the back seat of the car.
There are two types, the classic baby seat and the "lifter" for children over 3 years of age..
If you do not have the car seats, you risk being fined, not just in France, but in most of the EEC countires.
But even if it was not obligatory....Isn't your childs life worth the effort?

Evelyne L
Yes. We are going this week and were told that the 6 year old will require a car seat. You can rent them, along with the car, if you decide not to bring your own. Since the car interiors are different and we aren't sure that the US brand seats are accepted we decided to rent, to be sure that it fits properly.

I don't know about the laws there, but isn't the safety of your child the real issue?
Law or not, you know it is the right thing to do in order to keep your child safe in an accident.
Driving in a foriegn country can be dangerous because you will not be familiar with the roadways and traffic laws.
Buy a carseat when you get there instead of bringing it with you.
Have a safe trip!!

I don't know if it's required but I would definitely do it. The French drive like madmen. There are no speed limits.

Yup! New law in all EU states means that all children under 12 need to be in the back of the car with an appropriate restraint which would mean a child seat for shorties

Love your child and place him or her in a safety seat...

I think you can hire one at the car rental company
All children must have a car seat in France
