Not sure which is the closest resort, but for a choice between the Alps and the Pyrenees, the Alps are closer. Take a look at the websites below for ideas.

Incidentally, one little tip: if you are driving to the Alps, consider driving down through Belgium and filling up with fuel in Luxembourg. There are no road tolls in Belgium whereas there are on some French autoroutes (which can work out quite expensive), and Luxembourg (at the southern tip of Belgium) has the cheapest fuel in central Europe. You could make quite a saving.

PS - Do I need to point out that of course you can drive to France? Just drive your car on the train (Le Shuttle) at Folkestone and you'll be whisked through the Tunnel in about 35 minutes. No water wings required!
