Why are the French so mean?

depends on how you define mean =)
I like to call them different.

It fits under the chapter cultural differences...

When you speak French it changes in my oppinion, I've never had problems with Parisians...

But then again I may be very mean!

French people are no meaner than anyone else. If you at least attempt to speak french with them they are perfectly nice and helpful. I REALLY hate the "mean french people" stereotype.
At least they aren't dumb americans!

They're not, if you had a bad experience, maybe you should ask yourself if you did something to insult someone. Or maybe they were having a bad day, are you polite to everyone you see?

Well, I guess you missed my Paris family. They are cool people. :)

My experience with the Parisian is as in many other cities: mixed. I know there are great people around in town but I've also met quite a number that came over as rude (especially officials). I think there are two main reason for this behaviour. First of all, city life. There is quite a bit of stress in town and people are tense. This is worse in Paris than other cities. The other thing is that class and social structure (and behaviour) are very important in France. So in general behaviour they keep quite a bit of a distance. Sometimes it's even worse if they have a position of power. To see a real difference you should go to the Netherlands afterwards. :)

When you find them in a more relaxed situation and get to know them better you find another face. But for that you have to get to really meet some and that's difficult if you're just visiting.

Why don't you ask why Americans are so fat? And so dumb?
These questions are equally valid as yours (i.e. hardly at all).

But when I read through the questions in this section I begin to understand where the second idea comes from.

I beg to differ.I'm a Parisian and I get along with everyone.
The Parisians are very friendly and they will not hesitate helping out someone in need.

I love Paris and the people there! After reading some responses though, I feel saddened. I am American and have been to France a number of times . . . around 10 and I have never had a bad experience with any Parisian. In fact, I just came home from vacation to Paris and London and being in Paris made me feel more at home than London and the people were so much nicer in France. I do not understand why you say that about Americans. I know no French but would love to learn although I try. If you treat Parisians the right way, which is to respect and learn their culture, I find no problems whatsoever. Sorry for the rant but I just love going to Paris and meeting Parisians who I now have life long friendships with. Also, Parisian clothing is the best, hands down . . . I don't care what the English have to say!

They're not mean, they're culturally different and so much better than us. At least they kiss better. Of course, some of them prolly don't like Americans cuz they think Americans are all fat (which is not true.)

I live near paris and my mother always say me than i'm not french cause i never do like french ppl

plus i'm not arrogant, i always help tourists (i think they only see me in Paris lol), i dont like to be speed as parisians etc etc
