Why do Europeans have such perfect suntans? Pourquoi sont les europeens parfaitment bronzé?

Just something I noticed, I live in Australia and whenever I see a tourist or visitor from Europe, particularly male tourists, they always have such flawlessly tanned skin.

On the other hand, Australians (including myself) are pale and blotchy in comparison, which really defies logic since Australia is one of the sunniest countries in the world.

Are the suntans I'm looking at on the Europeans just really expensive fake tans, or solarium tans. How do you guys get such perfect tans?

Do you not get skin cancer in Europe?

Additional Details
I have dark hair and brown eyes, not red hair, but it just so happens that I have very fair skin.

J'ai les cheveux noir et des yeux brun, pas de cheveux rouge, mai encore j'ai le peau vraiment blanc.

Europeans in general are much more groomed than Australians. I learned this the hard way - being a scruffy backpacker in a room full of pretty french girls, but that's another story. They do spend more on themselves that way. And wouldn't you want to brush up on your act when you are in a room full of well dressed people all the time? For instance, Germans take great care of their feet (think of all those funny shoes they invent all the time) My dry bits were pointed out several times and since then I have pumiced and polished and moisterised to perfection. The same is for their tans. Due to the climate they love nothing better than driving to Spain and lolling around naked on a beach for a few weeks then come back all crispy before the cruel winter hits. And it helps that they are always wearing blinding white t'shirts. And those that can't make it end up in the solarium. I have seen solarium rooms lined with those lights that you walk into and stand there for as long as you like topping up after your spa and loofa. I am generalising about the population though. But if you think about it, if you only had the sun for a few months of the year your skin would be near perfect as well. So a little sun for those few weeks per year really doesn't compare to what we get here. But I wouldn't think the same of those that live on the Mediteranean, particularly Italy? I've seen some really saggy leather bags there.

Ne t'inquiète pas j'habite en Europe (je suis Français) mais je ne suis pas bronzé du tout !!!

Many Australians have inherited the "red hair with freckles" gene from their Celtic ancesters of the British Isles. These have a hard time tanning because their lack of melanin in the skin gives them little protection against the sun, let alone Australian sun. Which is why Australia has the highest skin cancer rate in the world. It doesn't defy logic as you say, it's on the contrary completely logical since it takes centuries to milleniums for a population to adapt to their environment (European skin is still not adapted to Australia's climate).

Europeans are a mix of different peoples, dark-skinned southern Europeans and even pale-skinned Scandinavian blondes tan more easily. But many people from the British Isles and other parts of Europe don't tan well either but they are not exposed to such strong sunrays as Australians are so the little tan they may get develops more slowly and doesn't damage their skin so much. And maybe those that cannot tan avoid sunny vacation destinations anyway, which is why you may not see them in Australia (although the British-Irish summer invasion of the Spanish Costa De Sol defeats this theory!). But skin cancer exists in Europe too, even among populations who tan easily.

I have inherited my dad's African genes and I am half Celtic (my mother is white, from France) but no one in my white side of the family is red-haired as far as I know so I have no problem: I am dark-skinned year round but I do get darker in summer. But I know other mixed people like me who despite being considered black by most white people don't tan well in the sun, they develop freckles instead and burn more easily. I believe one of their white ancesters must have had red hair and passed the gene along to them.

EDIT: You don't need to have red hair yourself, you may be carrying the gene from an ancester (like the black people I know). Or it's just because your skin has very little melanin so it can't get much darker than your natural complexion.

Maybe they were getting vacations in ur perfect beaches :p

I was about to tell the same thing as Choco Bn for the British !

But all the europeans don't have a great tan , I'm french and I have a very pale skin.. But I like it and don't find tanned people more beautiful ^^

Haha, the English are certainly not blessed with wonderfully bronzed skin. Well, apart from my father, but I inherited my mother's skin. I'm like the snow queen!
