Why do people go to France and call French people snooty if they are that way for a reason? |
I've heard several people say that they hate France because the people are rude, but if you go over there, don't even bother to learn French, and you talk very loudly, thinking everyone will understand you, it's kind of rude, and the French have a right to look down upon you because of this. Some people may learn French before they go over to France, but I'm certain they do not respect the French enviornment or culture and expect everyone to speak English and respect them IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY! I would like for anyone who hasn't done this to tell me, please, because I'm puzzled... |

I thought the French people were wonderful when I travelled through France.... polite, helpful, very civilized. I do not have a gift for languages, but before I travelled I managed to learn a few phrases of French to get started... including please, thank you, and apologies like "please excuse my poor French" and "I'm very sorry, but do you speak English." When I started in my fractured French rather than automatically assuming everyone spoke English, many French people were very quick to volunteer to switch to English with a smile in order to help me out (or to keep my terrible French from hurting their ears!). They just understandably wanted the respect of having their own language acknowledged first.
You are right, some Americans are arrogant and disrespectful when they travel to other countries. It's ignorance... our education system does not emphasize learning the languages and cultures of others, which is an embarrassing shame. Older Americans especially, and still those in more backwards parts of the country, were not taught how to be good world citizens. Bear with us, most of us do know that the world is changing and that we must learn and change with it, but there will always be a few ill-mannered provincials who try to cling to the old American imperialist ways. |

We expect everyone to do things the American way..I think the French people are quite nice, just give them the same respect you would like in your own country. Don't expect them to change the way they do things, which I don't always agree with..but I am just a visitor...Ugly Americans..let's try to beat that wrap. |

I lived in Paris for two years when I was younger. It was the best time I have ever had. The people are so nice, as long as you are respectful. I remember seeing a group of tourists walking into a restaurant once. They were very loud, commenting on everything. They were rude to the waiter when he did not IMMEDIATELY speak to them in English. They were loud and obnoxious the whole time, and made fun of the food. Due to people like that, the French are a little apprehensive about Americans, and understandably so. But they are truly nice and welcoming, and I never had one problem while I lived there. |

You see, many people think that they're more valuable than the world. They don't have to speak the native language, yet tourists have to speak English. Of course, I have different reasons for hating France, but that's based on history. |
