French bureacracy is terrible (so is the English!) but if you just live a normal life it does not affect you. Thre sort of things that drive us mad are:-

Speed cameras (money making machines)
2 weekly dustbin emptying
Ever increasing council rates
Everything to do with our Government
Crime (and not dealing with it)
Stealth taxes
To many immigrants (I know we will become one in France.....)
Better weather
Better food
slower pace of life
Need I go on?????

It's cheaper and the food/drink is better as well as a nicer pace of life.

Tastier food, better weather, nicer people - take your pick; everything is better on the other side.

Most English retire in France for no other reason than its handy to nip back to see grand kids and stock up with teabags in the uk, while seeking a little respite from the constant rain.
A lot retire in Spain too. They come here for Sun. But still go back for reasons ive described above.
The cheaper the flights the more that they travel back and forth.

good question, I'm French and I wonder why too. I've been to England and I liked it, there's nice countryside too, it has it's charm, with the sheep, the mysterious castles in the fog, the warm atmosphere of the pubs, the red telephone boxes, the nice little houses with their little garden, and they seem to have more purchase power than we do, I didn't find the pace of life to be quicker (??!) I like the famous "flegme britannique" and humour ...I wouldn't move to live there because I like my country and wouldn't like to leave my family, but if I was born there I don't see no reason why I would leave it to make my life in France....it's again the "grass is greener there" complex I think.

It's cheaper, better health care, certainly better weather and better food

The weather. The peacefulness. The food.
