Why does everyone in France smoke?
Hi I am from Australia and i am learning french at school. I went to France a couple of years ago. It was unbelieveable to me how many people there smoke. I went to see a French film last night and only one character in the film did not smoke. I don't understand why in movies it is necessary for all the characters to casually be holding a cigarette when they are doing jobs around the house, eating lunch and talking. Even the teenagers in the movie smoked. Is it part of theie culture? Do they not realise that it is bad for you?
Not 'everyone' smoke and if you take a film as a benchmark I can tell you that you have very serious problems if Crocodile Dundee or The Combination is a true description of all Australians.
Because they are not paranoid schizophrenics like everyone here is in the states.

In the first place "everyone" in France doesn't smoke. The percentage of the population that smokes doesn't differ significantly from that of other European states.
I doubt that any director in his right mind gives a tinker's dam as to whether the actions depicted in his movies fulfill someone's notion of healthy behavior.
Movies are not morality plays except in countries controlled by the Taliban or those who have the same damnable belief that they have a right to dictate to others how they should live their lives.

we don't smoke more than others, if you had been to other countries in Europe you would have seen it's the same. When I went to England I thought how is it possible that people drink so much alcohol, but they don't drink more than us, it's just that we don't drink in the streets so we're not used to it. In American series we see people drinking glasses of whisky all day long, maybe it doesn't shokes you because you're used to it, but I find it boring too.
