Why doesn't European countries use washcloths?

While traveling in France, there were no washcloths in hotels. Why? What do Europeans use instead?

In France they use what is called a "gant", which is actually translated "glove. It is made of terrycloth like a face-cloth , but is sewn together on the front and sides, and slips over your hand, more like a mitten actually, but with no thumb. It takes some getting used to, but works just the same. Not sure why you didn't find them in hotels. I am thinking they probably had some, but you didn't recognize them for what they are. Sometimes they have the soap and shampoo tucked up inside like as in a pocket. I am not sure what these are called in other languages, but I think they are used in other parts of Europe as well.

Easy - it is to do with health and safety. Who'd want to rub their face on a washcloth previously used by hundreds of other people? Not me as there's no guarantee that all the germs etc are going to be killed in the washing machine.

To answer - yes we do, but we bring our own.

Same in Holland. I'm curious too. They looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for one.
