Yes you need one but chances ar they wont ask to see it. But, if you don't have it, they wont let you in. |

You will need a passport yes.
There is a passport check even when taking the car by ferry.
If you try it without a passport most likely you will not be allowed to continue your journey. |

Not just passport but by law you must have with you in the car all documents such as driving licence, proof of ownership (or authorisation from the owner) and insurance. The gendarmes can be awkward to say the least! |

You'll need your passport, your driving licence and proof that your car is insured to drive on the continent. You will also need proof of breakdown cover (certainly for some European countries...can't remember if it's France specifically....). |

Assuming that you are traveling from the UK to France (because of the ferry), you have to carry your passport.
There will be a check at the borders (while entering/leaving France and while entering UK - maybe while leaving UK as well).
However, when you are traveling from France to any other schengen country (Belgium, Spain, NL, Italy, etc..), you are normally not asked for your passport but as I said you definitely SHOULD carry your passport. |

You need a passport to go anywhere these days. You can't even go accross to Canada from Michigan without a passport anymore. |
