12 or 15 passenger rental van in Munich, Germany? |
My family and I are traveling around Europe this summer (end of June to early July) and we need either a 12 or 15 passenger rental van where we can pick up in Munich. We've done alot of web searching, but haven't come up with anything.
On our last time European road trip we used a 9 passenger van, but this time we have more family members coming along. We just want a rental van that has 10+ seating, (even if it isn't specifically 12 or 15). Any help with be appreciated! |

Uh - good luck on that.. as afar as I remember the local driving laws state that you´ll need a special license to have more than 8 passengers (or something along that line).. I feel your dilemma - I rented a 9 passenger van 2 years ago but the family has grown since as well.. so next time we´ll have to rent 2 guess..
I checked with the local Munich car rentals but as you´re already seen for yourself, the biggest will be a 9 passenger van... sorry, but I tried..
have you emailed the bigger companies such as Sixt, Europcar or Avis? Do you happen to have ties to the military and could maybe get one of their Outdoor Rec buses? (you´ll need a USAREUR license for those though).
it´ll be interesting if you manage to get one! I´ll keep my fingers crossed for you! |

Look like you need a little bus. It's OK.
Did you look all the rent a car places? Like" Sixt, Europcar, Avis. Look on line and you can make it reservation and pick up at the Airport Munich. Have fun... |

unfortunately I'm pretty sure you won't be able to get a van this size.
First because you need a special driving license and second because car rentals don't provide these type of cars. There's not enough demand for it.
Your best option would be two smaller vans. |

It will be tough. Check out Hertz car rental, though. They seem to have a very good selection of larger vehicles.
The trick is going to be your drivers license. If you have an Army Europe license, you will need a Class 2 (maybe 3). If you have a German one, you will need the D1. If you are using an international drivers license, talk to the person that you are getting it from and see if they can't sneak in a certification for a mini-bus license. |

Unfortunately, sidulrike is right - you need a driving license category D1, a special driving license for a van with more than eight seats for passengers - the same license a taxi driver has in germany.
If you have a german driving license older than 2003, you might get around this.
I don't know whatit's like with UK/US licenses, they might have that included.It's best to check with a "Führerscheinstelle" to clear that. |
