3 days around Cologne...?

am arriving in Frankfurt on 8/26 and 7 am by plane. I am leaving for the US on 8/29 at 1 pm. The time in between is completely free! I have no plans -- no car/train/bus reservations, no hotels, nothing. What should I do? Spending time in Frankfurt has been recommended as well as taking a train to Cologne. Any other general/specific ideas? It should not be too expensive and it should be closeby-- I don't want to spend a lot of time traveling.
Additional Details
to clarify, by 8/26 I meant August 26 and 8/29 means August 29.

If you can do it - spend time in Cologne. I was there for 12 days in July and cannot wait for my next trip there. Good people, good food...rich in history. Definitely spend time seeing the Dom.

I was just in Cologne a few weeks ago....I recommend travel down to Koblenz (no letter 't') and taking a boat down the Rhine (from where it meets the Moselle). You will see numerous castles from the river, some of which you can hop off and take a tour of! Then visit some of the local inns that make wine on their premises! We brought back some lovely Riesling and a really nice red varietal (which isn't so common for the region). We also had a wonderful meal with fillet of wild boar and other local delicacies.

enjoy!

I was there last June. I'd def check out der Dom and maybe see a museum? There's a music one, a chocolate one, and a sports one. Just walking around and getting the feel of the city is nice. I stayed in Bonn and loved it! The atmosphere was so different and amazing compared to the US. Check it out. Have a great time

If you go to Cologne as must see is the Cathedral, the view from the top of it is pretty cool.
